How screen casting works on a Mac, explained simply
AirPlay, Chromecast and DLNA in plain English: how your Mac finds a screen, what actually travels over your Wi-Fi, and why some casts stutter.
Casting looks like magic: you click an icon, and a second later your Mac is on the TV across the room. Underneath it is a short, predictable sequence of steps — discovery, negotiation, encoding and streaming — and once you know them, most casting problems stop being mysterious.
Step 1: discovery — how your Mac finds the screen
Every castable device advertises itself on your local network. Apple TVs and AirPlay-capable TVs announce over Bonjour (mDNS), Chromecast devices use mDNS too, and older smart TVs use SSDP, the discovery half of DLNA. Your Mac listens for those announcements and builds the list of screens you see in the picker. This is why casting only works when both devices sit on the same Wi-Fi network — and why a guest network, a VPN, or client isolation on the router makes the list come up empty.
Step 2: negotiation — agreeing on a format
Once you pick a screen, the two devices agree on what they can both handle: resolution, frame rate, video codec (usually H.264 or HEVC), audio codec, and whether the stream is mirrored or a direct video hand-off. A 2015 TV may cap out at 1080p30 with H.264 only, while a recent Apple TV will happily take 4K HEVC. The negotiated result, not your Mac's display, decides the picture quality you end up seeing.
Step 3: two very different ways to cast
- Mirroring: your Mac captures the screen, encodes it into video in real time, and streams it. Flexible — anything on screen goes across — but it costs CPU and adds latency.
- Direct video hand-off: your Mac tells the TV the address of a video file or stream and steps aside. The TV does the decoding, so quality is higher, battery drain is lower, and you can keep using your Mac for other things.
CastFree prefers direct hand-off whenever it is casting a video file, and falls back to mirroring for everything else. That is why casting a movie feels lighter than mirroring a presentation.
Step 4: streaming — what travels over your Wi-Fi
The stream itself stays inside your home. Packets go from your Mac to your router and straight to the receiving device; nothing needs to reach a company's servers for the picture to appear. A 1080p mirror typically uses 8–15 Mbit/s, and 4K can reach 40 Mbit/s or more, which is the real reason casting quality tracks your Wi-Fi quality so closely.
Why casts stutter, and what actually fixes it
- Use the 5 GHz band. The 2.4 GHz band is crowded and rarely sustains a clean 1080p mirror.
- Keep both devices on the same network and SSID — mesh systems that split bands can hide the receiver from discovery.
- Prefer a wired receiver. Ethernet to the TV or Apple TV removes half the wireless hops.
- Close heavy GPU apps while mirroring; real-time encoding competes with them for the same hardware.
The short version
Casting is discovery, negotiation, encoding and streaming — four steps, all of them local. Nothing in that chain requires a subscription, an account, or a cloud service, which raises an obvious question we answer in the next article.
